College Fair Broadens our Horizons
|
|
Kids of Honor® YEAH Club recently visited the Baltimore Convention Center to attend the National Association for College and Admissions Counseling (NACAC) College Fair. The fair had over 100 respective colleges and universities in attendance with UMES and SU being included. The students found the fair to be “very enlightening and eye opening”. At the fair, Kids of Honor® YEAH Club members gathered tons of information on schools all over the country. Some students were excited and overjoyed after meeting the Admission Counselors at their dream schools. The students found that some universities they have an option to submit SAT scores or not; which was information that made dreams of attending college more realistic. After hearing the news about the options of admissions they quickly completed information forms. A Kids of Honor® YEAH student said “speaking with some of the admissions counselors they made me feel welcomed and wanted at their school”. Throughout the course of the fair and conversations with counselors students were exposed to other careers, majors, and clubs that the different schools offer. YEAH students attended the fair wanting to major in one thing and after speaking with the counselors they were inspired to select a major as well as a minor. The YEAH students received answers to questions pertaining to the student teacher ratio, school population, graduation rate, and job after college percentages. YEAH Club members left the fair feeling not only inspired but more motivated and driven to do their best. “This was an experience we will never forget.” |

Back To School Pool Party
|
| Kids of Honor® kicked off the 2011-2012 school year with a back to school pool party. Our connection club families and their friends enjoyed a fun filled night at the YMCA. Some splashed in the pool to stay cool for the night. Others hit the court – playing basketball and racquet ball. Some even hit the gym getting fit for the new school year by working out. Parents were playing water games with their kids. Kids of Honor® reunited some old friends while others made new friends. Siblings had conversations over who would win the 2on2 basketball match ups. There were over 80 participants in this night of fun. Students and their parents ended their night with laughter, snacks, and lots of smiles. |
| Wednesday night from 7-9pm, a night of bowling was held at Cherokee Bowling Lanes in Fruitland, to raise money for the Kids of Honor organization. Tickets were $25 per person, which paid for 2 games of bowling, a drink, a hotdog and shoe rentals. Many students from Kids of Honor showed up and had a great time. Pleasantly, the community came out and bowled for the cause as well; Bay Runner Shuttle, Pohanka of Salisbury and Enterprise just to name a few. By the end of the night, a bowler anonymously gave $250 to sponsor a student in Kids of Honor for one year. Overall, the night was a joyous success raising over $1,000! |

| Kids of Honor® and their families enjoyed an enriching day at the Walter's Art Gallery and then relaxed, ate and shopped at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.
A long, HOT, June day was the highlight of the year for a busload of kids and their families.
Arriving when the doors opened at the Walter's Art Gallery, teams of youth and adults explored Egyptian tombs, medieval armor collections and paintings galore while competing in a scavenger hunt that led them through their explorations.
Then they boarded the bus and went to the Inner harbor for an afternoon of food, shopping, fun and more food.
Naps and chatter about knights in shining armor filled the bus ride home. What a great day of learning and fun! |

YEAH visits Colleges in Philadelphia
|
| How do our high school kids spend the last day of spring break? They show their dedication to education by investing the beautiful day in a visit to Philadelphia checking out colleges. Reva and Dawn took a group of students to Widener University and the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College. One young man told us that this trip really opened his mind. He only considered joining the military after high school. " Now I see these interesting fields of study. I could stay in ROTC in College and join the Military after that. Now I have a lot more to think about."
Everyone enjoyed the beautiful day and learned about what each school had to offer... photography... pastries... chemistry... engineering... journalism... ROTC!
